Let Royals pay the £2m wedding cost

- Edited by FIONA PARKER

■ There’s only one way to describe the royals, and that’s selfish. It’s a disgrace that they expect taxpayers to pay for the security and clean-up after Eugenie’s wedding.

Didn’t we pay enough for Harry’s nuptials? How many people could be taken off the street and housed with this money, and how many NHS operations could be paid for?

The royals know only too well the dire straits our country is in, but they just don’t care.

For a wealthy family who could easily support themselves they are a disgrace, and we are all fools to keep supporting them in the lavish lifestyle they are accustomed to.

■ Can someone explain to me why I, as a taxpayer, should be making a contribution to this minor royal’s lavish wedding? I have been paying tax since age 14 and I am still paying tax on my pension.

I would like to see my taxes going to fund our struggling NHS and social care, not to some pampered royal who has no public duties or official function.

Vince McAllister, Ely, Cambs

■ The cost in security and clean-up fees alone will top £2.25million and who is paying? You and I are all forking out for this ridiculous charade which, since we weren’t asked, is undemocratic and unconstitutional. I wonder, while more than £2million is being spent on police for this wedding, how many real-life and serious crimes will be ‘screened-out’ during the event?

A J Smith, March, Cambs

■ If Eugenie and her fiance want a similar occasion to Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, then as father-ofthe-bride, Prince Andrew should pick up the tab. It’s not as if Eugenie is an important royal – she does not actually do anything significant for this country like some of them do. Richard Watts, Hereford

■ I’m more than furious at the money being spent on this wedding

which would be better going on the health service, the poor, housing and many other services.

I, for one, will not be supporting or watching this charade. I urge people to boycott this wedding as a protest against its utter waste of public money.

KB Sutherland, South East London

■ I can’t believe the furore over the cost of Princess Eugenie’s wedding. It’s the same as any other public event, whether it be a political rally or a celebration or festival.

In my opinion, what the Royal Family brings into this country in terms of tourism and prestige more than makes up for any outlay by the taxpayers. I bet there are plenty of people cheering on the happy couple tomorrow. Kerry Jaymes South London

■ Can someone tell me what Princess Eugenie does for Britain? And why are we covering the costs for her wedding when we could be putting the money towards extra doctors and nurses, or helping the homeless? Let her mother and father pay.

Sue Watts, Cardiff
