JAYDEN’S STOCK HIGHER THAN MESSI – THANKS TO HERO MURRAY

- Forte 14, Stockley 63 BY MATT BAMSEY

EXETER SWINDON 2 0 JAYDEN STOCKLEY has revealed how watching footage of Brighton striker Glenn Murray is the secret behind his success.

The Exeter frontman bagged his 22nd goal in 2018 to make him the leading marksman for league goals in the top four tiers – a tally that puts him ahead of Tottenham striker Harry Kane and Liverpool ace Mo Salah.

After converting his ninth of the season against Swindon, Stockley admitted watching Murray’s movement in the box has boosted his goal threat.

Stockley (right) said: “When I was younger I used to admire Teddy Sheringham. He was not blessed with pace but the first five yards were in his head and he was such a quick thinker.

“I’m nowhere near his level but happy to be a poor-man’s Teddy. Nowadays I like to watch Glenn Murray and what he does at the top level.

“His movement is so clever and I try and copy some of the ways in which he pulls off the back of people. He is a player I look up to and it has helped me.

“I had a chuckle to myself when I saw my name alongside Harry Kane and Mo Salah. It looks hilarious. I even saw one with Messi, Ronaldo and then Stockley. I was laughing my head off and thinking ‘come on, you can’t do that’.

“It would be amazing if I could stay there. But my main focus is promotion.” Exeter’s fourth home win on the spin, thanks to Stockley’s 63rd-minute strike – his sixth of the season with his head – and Jonathan Forte’s 14th minute opener, kept the Grecians in second place in the table.

But Swindon boss Phil Brown was left fuming as his mid-table side have now gone four games without a win.

He said: “Passing the ball around thinking this is the right way to play because England do it is absolute rubbish. Our cutting edge was nothing short of abysmal.

“We will keep on experimenting until we find that winning formula.”
