Migrants defy danger to cross river

- BY JOSH LAYTON josh.layton@mirror.co.uk

DESPERATE Honduran migrants who Donald Trump wants to keep out of the US have risked their lives getting over a river into Mexico.

Around 2,000 people, including many children, dodged police by swimming across or clinging to homemade rafts.

Before getting over the fast-flowing river at the border with Guatemala, they were stranded on a nearby bridge where Mexican officers had fired tear gas to keep them back.

As they continued their 2,800-mile trek north from Honduras to the US, migrants swarmed across the water in full view of the hundreds of police operating the blockade on the bridge.

Reaching the Mexican side by raft, Sairy Bueso, 24, clutched her two-yearold girl, who recently had a heart op. The mum said: “She suffered greatly because of all the people crowded on the bridge.

“There are risks we must take for the good of our children.”

Migrants were not apparently detained on the Mexican bank.

Police in riot gear arrived in several buses as the caravan marched on after Youngsters up to their necks on scary crossing Migrants on bridge where families waited, inset crossing the border but an officer said there were no orders to block them.

The travellers have completed about a quarter of the journey.

Mexico refused mass entry to those on the bridge at the border city of Ciudad Hidalgo, but allowed small groups to apply for asylum.

Migrants said the process was taking too long so they decided to give up trying to enter the country legally. Some remained on the bridge over the muddy Suchiate River yesterday. The water is almost 220 yards wide and swollen after rainfall. Exhausted travellers say they are fleeing violence, crime and poverty in Honduras. Aid groups fear people will die on the march. Many are relying on strangers for food and drink. US President Trump said he is ready to “call up the military” as the thousands of people head to the States.
