Sarkozy fails in trial appeal

- BY LUCY THORNTON

BRITAIN’S first ever tramtrain derailed six hours after launching… when it crashed into a lorry.

Passengers were showered with glass after the 20mph smash in Sheffield. Many were in tears and emergency crews treated minor injuries.

Supertram supporter Steve Barber, in the front seat, said: “We were in the air then we landed six metres to the left.

“There was a lady quite badly hurt. The driver and conductor were fantastic but once emergency services arrived they were in tears.”

Reports claimed the flatbed lorry was crossing the track at traffic lights when it was hit at 3.30pm yesterday.

All trams were cancelled.

The new Supertram should run to Rotherham, South Yorks, on tram and train lines – the first in the UK to do so.

Earlier, Transport Minister Jo Johnson had joined crowds for day one of a two-year trial of the service, which is operated by Stagecoach and run by Network Rail.

The project, already mocked as a fiasco, is three years late with costs up from £15million to £75million.

Gary Nixon, also aboard, said: “I won’t be getting on it again for a while now.” FORMER French president Nicolas Sarkozy has lost his appeal against standing trial for an alleged corrupt election campaign.

He could be jailed if found guilty of fraud, false accounting and breach of trust during his failed 2012 re-election bid.

Mr Sarkozy, 63, who denies wrongdoing, was referred to trial in February 2017 but he appealed.

It is alleged he exceeded an £18.5million legal limit for campaign funding by nearly double.
