Joyce Beresford at court yesterday A GRANDMOTHER was fined and banned from driving yesterday after she admitted causing an accident in which three people died.
Joyce Beresford, 87, collided with a car she failed to spot at a junction. The victims were her husband of 60 years Robert, 90, and friends Patrick and Heidi Eyre, aged 80 and 77. Three in the other car were injured.
Beresford, of Medstead, Hants,pleaded guilty to causing death by careless driving. District Judge Tim Pattinson allowed her to walk free from Basingstoke magistrates court with a £1,650 fine and three-year ban. Craig Savage, 35, denies murdering wife Michelle, 32, and mother-in-law Heather Whitbread, 53, in St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, in March.
Savage told Lewes crown court he went to their home with a stolen semi-automatic rifle in an attempt at “suicide by cop”.
But he claimed Michelle tried to grab the gun as he entered, adding: “She was squeezing the trigger. Five rounds went round the room. I don’t know where.”
Bull terrier Zeus also died. Savage said he fled so paramedics could attend.
He denies two murders and a weapon possession charge. The trial continues.
