102-yr-old racing driver stuck on his roof for three days after trying to fix TV aerial
Former racing driver Mr Easton A FORMER racing driver aged 102 is recovering in hospital after being stuck on his roof for three days.
Ron Easton, who was known as Ton-up Ron, is thought to have climbed a ladder up on to the flat roof of his extension to fix his TV aerial.
After a milk delivery lady raised the alarm firefighters got him down and he was airlifted to hospital where he is now said to be in a stable condition.
Ron, of Bigbury-on-Sea, Devon, was a noted autocross competitor in the 1960s, racing a TVR Vixen.
The former car rental firm owner sailed through a driving test at 93 and regularly drove his two MG sports cars up to his 100th birthday. Trish Bagley, who delivers milk and papers to Mr Easton, became worried when she found two unopened bottles on Wednesday.
She got no answer to the door or his phone and raised the alarm.
A local maintenance man who was called out to check if he was stuck upstairs found Mr Easton on the roof of the extension.
Ms Bagley said: “He always takes his milk in every day so alarm bells rang.
“The ladder was on the wrong side of the house so no one could see it.
“He must have slipped or something, we just don’t know.
“He’s a strong man. He’s always out in the garden. Hopefully he will make a full recovery.” The shop where Ms Bagley works said Mr Easton’s family did not want to talk and described him as a “very private man”.
Devon and Somerset Fire Service were called to Mr Easton’s house.
A spokesman said: “We sent three appliances to the scene. The space to work in was far too narrow for our aerial platform, so firefighters used a stretcher from an ambulance to climb on the roof and rescue him.
“It was reported to us that he had been up there for around three days.”
