Saturday, 10am, is probably not the best time to ask for two pints if you want to watch your weight over the weekend.

That, however, was what came tumbling out of my mouth in the Britannia in Oxford, having braced an early start on a crisp autumn morning.

Just as well then that there was some method to this madness and some exercise attached to the early tipple.

About a hundred of us gathered in the Headington hostelry to mark the 125th birthday of Oxford United, founded in that very bar on October 26, 1893.

We toasted the club’s founding fathers and posed for pictures with Liverpool loanee midfielder Cameron Brannagan and Oxford’s Thai owner, Sumrith Thanakarnjanasuth, who goes by the nickname Tiger for oral convenience.

Then came the penance for the pints – we took to the streets to walk, in aid of the mental health charity Oxfordshire Mind, the four miles from where it all began to the current stadium.

The problem with walking all that way to a football match was that, inevitably, we worked up a thirst and caved in to further alcohol temptation on arrival at the Kassam Stadium.

At least the players kept us exercised in celebration with a 3-0 birthday win over Shrewsbury, but no Hallowe’en disguise could hide the day’s excess. My cross trainer was given a good workout on Sunday as a peace offering – and will be a frequent companion this week. 40”, 39”, 42”, To find your nearest Slimming World group visit slimmingworld.co.uk or call 0344 897 8000.
