On last night’s telly

Prince, Son And Heir Charles At 70, BBC1 ★★★

There was a big question at the beginning of this Prince Charles love-in: “What kind of king will he be?”

Given this documentary was celebrating his 70th birthday and he hasn’t landed the big job yet, I’m tempted to suggest he will probably be a brief kind of king.

All the more reason to hit the ground running. Which is presumably why Team Chuck was more than happy to agree to this PR puff piece – sorry, warts and all fly-on-the-wall.

I mean, surely we all got the message that Charles does a lot for charity and cares a lot about the planet way before we were told for the fifth time.

No wonder I found it so hard to reconcile news that he’s “a stickler for turning lights off” with clips of him at Buckingham Palace basking in the full glow of giant chandeliers.

Obviously, I knew we were never going to get shots of him in his counting house totting up the latest takings from his duchy’s expanding food empire.

And to be fair, the footage of him doing turkey impressions and talking to pigs was exactly the kind of thing someone like me who has grown up watching the royals being berks in public wanted to see.

I also enjoyed the small talk between Charles and Camilla.

I drew the line, though, at Camilla intimating she’d like the public to hear more about “the things he does behind the scenes that people don’t know about”. Some of us are still getting over the Camillagate tapes, ma’am.
