Shameful hero attack

-

■ I was absolutely sickened to read about 98-year-old war veteran Peter Gouldstone being attacked in his own home (Mirror, Nov 8). And all for a 10-year-old TV set and other items of little value. Unfortunately, Peter wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last until these thugs are jailed for their crimes. Bring back conscription and teach them a lesson.

■ Going through my old files on animal welfare, I found many of my letters that you had published on this important issue. The sad thing is that quite a few years on, despite promises by successive governments, not that much has changed. Keep fighting, Daily Mirror, along with your many supportive and caring readers. Pauline Wakefield Swadlincote, Derbys

I wrote to Mrs May last year regarding fireworks and the nuisance they cause to the elderly. Her reply was the Government didn’t want to stop the enjoyment of families. My two cats are terrified of the noise. In my view, bangers should not be sold to the public at all. Rita Gerrard, Swansea

British politics seems to repeat a pattern. The Tories gain power based on false promises, then when Labour is elected they have to first clean up the mess.

Having Labour in power for successive terms would help get Britain back on its feet again, not lying on its back as it is now. P Bennett, Stockport Gtr Manchester
