TESTS Weston-super-Mare THE number of dirty beaches in England has risen from seven to nine in a year, seawater tests show.

Among those rated “poor” were Weston-superMare in Somerset, South Bay in Scarborough, North Yorks and Wildersmouth beach, Ilfracombe, Devon.

Tests found 26 beaches were “sufficient”, 109 “good” and 271 “excellent”.

Eleven Scottish beaches were rated poor but Wales had a clean bill of health.

The Environment Agency said “water quality is essential” to tourism. A MAN is filmed taking flowers from a grave amid claims of a series of thefts at the site.

Bereaved family and friends said flowers, toys and vases have been going missing from the plot since April, so turned detective to see who was taking them.

A source close to the family said: “There are graves around it that don’t get touched, so this is personal. Someone suggested a camera to catch who was doing it. “So I hid one in a nearby tree.” The motion-activated device caught a cyclist apparently taking flowers from the grave of Kerry Russell, who died from a heart condition aged 12 in 1987, and sister Kirsty who died at 18 from the same condition in 1993.

Scattered alongside at Eastern Cemetery in Hull are the ashes of parents Steve and Patricia, who died in their 60s, three and four years ago.

Pat’s nephew Allan Hiley, 73, of Halifax, West Yorks, said: “Why would anyone do that? And why pick on just one grave?”

The man was filmed on two separate occasions, and both times the flowers were gone after he left. Hull City Council said it would not have removed flowers from a grave. Humberside Police confirmed it is investigating.
