Will delays lead to yet more division?

-

■ When David Cameron called the EU referendum in 2016 it was thought it would an easy win for Remain. Now here we are – political parties divided, as well as families, communities and UK countries.

We are left facing a Brexit deal that lacks support even from Theresa May’s own party.

Many MPs believe it’s a bad deal for Britain, that it would harm working people and industry, as well as lowering living standards. People didn’t vote in an EU referendum to be made worse off.

The deal fails to deliver frictionless access to European markets that industry, retail and transport rely on, while the backstop is just a fudge.

Parliament must either try to find common ground on the EU withdrawal or face being lambasted as nothing more than Muppet Show extras by generations to come. Paul Raybould, Torquay, Devon

■ If necessary we must leave with no deal. We should pay the EU no money and take immediate charge of our fishing waters and our borders.

As for a so-called People’s Vote, besides this being undemocratic and impractical, it would cause even more problems with a narrow vote either way. Ian Bentley Pudsey, West Yorks

■ Why did people believe all the rubbish from Farage and Johnson in the referendum campaign? I can remember what it was like before entering the Common Market when supermarkets were half full and in the winter you couldn’t buy salad or soft fruit, unlike today when they are available all year round.

I think Leavers are in for one almighty shock when we crash out and return to the dark days.

Paul Benson, Tunbridge Wells, Kent

■ What a farce this government has made of leaving the EU. In my lifetime this country has gone from having a great empire to being controlled by Europe – and now we could lose our democracy which is what a second vote would mean.

I didn’t vote for this Government but have to put up with them as they were democratically elected – and that’s what the Remainers must do.

It’s time the Tories told Europe where to go, got on with the job they were elected to do and started putting the Great back into Britain. Robert Kelly, Blackpool, Lancs

■ In the referendum some people voted as if the UK was still as powerful as the old British Empire.

The EU has said this is the only deal on offer, so the DUP, Brexiteers or Labour won’t get a better one. The people should have another vote on May’s deal, no deal or no Brexit.

Andrew Nutt, Bargoed, Caerphilly

■ My parents voted in favour of joining the Common Market in the hope of social and economic benefits, but more than 43 years later millions of jobs are part-time and poorly paid. So where is the protection from the EU? We’ve gone backwards. If the referendum is not implemented properly or May’s watered-down version stands, then in future there’s no other reason for any vote on anything to stand.

T Sayers, Spilsby, Lincs
