Paul Gascoigne before hearing PAUL Gascoigne has pleaded not guilty over an incident in which he allegedly kissed a woman fellow passenger on a train.

The former England football star, 51, was arrested at Durham railway station in August and charged by British Transport Police last month with sexual assault by touching.

He appeared at Peterlee magistrates court, Co Durham, yesterday where District Judge Kristina Harrison said the offence allegedly happened on the train at Darlington. Judge Harrison said: “The allegation is one of sexual assault and the prosecution say it involves kissing a female passenger on a train.”

The judge asked Gascoigne, who played for Newcastle and Spurs, to stand and said: “On August 20, on the York to Newcastle train, at Darlington you are alleged to have touched a woman over the age of 16, that touching was sexual and you did not believe she was consenting. How do you plead?”

Gascoigne, of Leicester, replied “not guilty” in a clear voice.

Judge Harrison said the case was suitable for trial by magistrates but Gascoigne was also given the option for trial by jury. He chose trial at crown court and the case The smiling Chelsea fan was adjourned until January 8 when he will appear at Teesside crown court in Middlesbrough.

Prosecutor Jolyon Parks, asked by the judge whether alternative charges had been considered, said there had been “review by the appropriate lawyers”.

After the hearing Gascoigne had a short talk with lawyer David Hallmark then left with three minders in a black people carrier.
