Another epic Euro night at Anfield as Reds squeeze through
MO SALAH produced another moment of magic to fire Liverpool into the knock-out stages of the Champions League.
But Jurgen Klopp’s side had to survive the tensest of finales to an emotional, nailbiting encounter with Napoli, as they clung tenaciously onto the 1-0 lead required to see them through.
And only a sensational save from Reds keeper Alisson in the dying seconds prevented a gut-wrenching end to the match. It was Salah’s 14th Champions League goal in just 21 games, and put him level with the legendary Ian
Rush on goals scored in Europe’s highest competition...and behind only Steven Gerrard on the all-time list.
Yet if that goal was eventually enough to deliver glory for the Reds, then it was their poor finishing for much of the game which led to such an excruciating end to the contest.
The Reds missed at least five golden chances to give the Italians a lifeline their performance simply didn’t deserve, and Napoli went so close to snatching an equaliser that would have sent Liverpool tumbling into the Europa League.
The missed chances left Anfield aghast, with at least a dozen passable opportunities missed.
Klopp was left grimacing in frustration, as Salah himself, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Naby Keita all missed when clean through.
