Supercalif­ragilistic­expialidoc­ious Mary Poppins has won the hearts of generation­s and was Walt Disney’s favourite film. The 1964 musical bagged five Oscars, including best actress for Julie Andrews as the magical nanny and best original song for Chim Chim Cher-ee.

Now Emily Blunt plays the iconic role in a new film that insiders say is even better.

Here are the secrets of Mary Poppins Returns... The story The film is set in 1934 during the Great Depression, 24 years after we last saw the Banks family. Siblings Jane and Michael are still living in the old house.

Michael’s life starts falling apart when the death of his wife leaves him in charge of his three children.

Only one person can piece this family back together with happiness.

The characters

Matthew Garber, who was the original freckle-faced boy, died aged 21 after catching hepatitis in India.

Michael Banks:

Now played by Ben Wishaw, 38, he works as a banker at Fidelity Fiduciary Bank in London, as his father did. Karen Dotrice was the young original, who this time is played by Emily Mortimer, 47. The union organiser has her mother’s suffragett­e spirit. Hamilton star Lin-Manuel Miranda, 38, is the lamplighte­r who was chimney sweep Bert’s apprentice.

Jane Banks: Jack:

Meryl Streep, 69, plays the owner of a trinket shop where everything turns upside down once a week. She raps her song Turning Turtle upside down from a chandelier. Colin Firth, 58, is the new president of Fidelity Fiduciary Bank, previously overseen by Mr Dawes Sr.

Dame Julie Walters, 68, appears as the Banks’ longsuffer­ing housekeepe­r. Dame Angela Lansbury, 93, takes on the role from the PL Travers books. Nods to the original

Mary’s first line to the Banks children: “Close your mouth, please, Michael – we are still not a cod fish”.
