Xmas pet warning

-

■ The Blue Cross animal welfare charity is gravely concerned about pets bought online as a Christmas present. Not only is it always a bad idea to get a pet as a surprise gift, there are no laws around the sale of pets online.

Many kittens and puppies are removed from their mothers too early, are not vaccinated against diseases, and are kept in poor conditions, so they are likely to grow into fearful, stressed adults. They may then be given up, sold on or abandoned through no fault of their own.

If you are ready to take on a pet, Blue Cross urges readers to consider a rescue animal who wants nothing more than to be in a loving home.

■ What a wonderful tribute to the veteran campaigner Harry Leslie Smith, who passed away aged 95, by his son John (Mirror, December 18).

Harry campaigned for a better world, and I sincerely hope his spirit lives on to the younger generation.

My condolences to John on the sad loss of his beloved father.
