Javid using ‘crisis’ to get into No10

-

ALISON Phillips is right in her assessment that Home Secretary Sajid Javid labelling the “crisis” in the English Channel a “major incident” is the Government’s desperate way of trying to drive a badly flawed Brexit deal through Parliament (Mirror, January 2).

However, I also suspect it is very much part of the Home Secretary’s cynical personal strategic plan towards becoming the next Tory Prime Minister.

I hope he fails on both counts. Mick Waites, Portsmouth

The number of boat refugees is minimal compared to those entering the UK by lorry and other means. For Javid to dispute their validity beggars belief, particularly as other European countries take in many thousands more than we do.

Could it be his remarks are aimed at securing a positive response to Theresa May’s botched Brexit plan when votes are cast in the Commons?

There can be no question the Tories are fuelling racial hatred in our divided country. Shame

on them. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has declared the handful of desperate migrants trying to get to Britain by boat such a “major incident” that he has redeployed two UK Border Force boats to patrol the Channel. He is manoeuvring for leadership of the Conservative Party after Theresa May and attempting to show them that, despite his own roots as the son of an immigrant, he’s prepared to be tough.

The Government needs to recognise these desperate refugees as human beings. Sasha Simic, North London

The problem is the current number of migrants crossing the Channel is just the tip of the iceberg. Once we leave the EU, there is likely to be more and Dover could have refugee camps around it just as Calais has now.

Can anybody see France doing anything to stop them once we leave? No chance.

They will be happy to pass the problem to us. R J Tandy Liverpool

Many of the asylum seekers who have crossed the Channel in recent weeks are desperate to connect with their families who are already in the UK.

I can understand that, so why can’t the Home Secretary? Jill Chandler, Fraserburgh Aberdeenshire I’m not against legal immigration but if we don’t put a stop to these illegal immigrants coming over here now it will get worse. As soon as the weather picks up we will be getting much larger ships crossing to England with hundreds on board, rather than just a few. Mick Streets Chesterfield Derbys Alison Phillips is spot-on.
