A MAN stabbed to death on a train was knifed nine times following a row with a fellow passenger, it is claimed.
Darren Pencille, 35, yesterday appeared in court accused of murdering Lee Pomeroy, 51.
The alleged attack occurred on the 12.58 from Guildford, Surrey, to London Waterloo on Friday, magistrates in Staines were told.
It has been claimed IT worker Mr Pomeroy followed Pencille after an argument.
Pencille, of Farnham, Surrey, is also accused of carrying an offensive weapon. He appeared in court wearing a grey prison-issue tracksuit and thick black-rimmed glasses.
Pencille shouted in court: “I’m innocent until proven guilty.”
When asked for his address, he said: “I do not have an address.”
The accused also spoke to confirm his name and age.
Afterwards his girlfriend Chelsea Mitchell, 27, also of Farnham, appeared charged with assisting an offender. She allegedly helped Pencille leave the scene having “known or believed him to be guilty of the offence”. Mitchell pleaded not guilty and claims she did not know until later in the evening there had been a murder, and thought there had been a “minor altercation”.
Both then appeared at Guildford crown court to be told a plea and trial preparation hearing will be held on February 7. They were remanded in custody.
In a statement over the weekend, Mr Pomeroy’s grieving family said he was a cultured man, who loved his 50-year-old wife Svetlana.
They said: “He was an honest, bright person, who loved music very much. He knew history and art and he was a bachelor of science in maths. He was a devoted family man and did everything for his family. “He was an honourable man and would always help somebody in trouble. He was a loving husband and father, he will be deeply missed.”
