Asked if footballers can find life difficult when they stop playing at the highest level, the ex-Liverpool midfielder said: “Sometimes we look at stories and think, ‘There is someone behaving badly’. It does open a debate... regarding players nearing the end and... what problems can be faced.”

The BBC pundit, speaking on talkSport radio, added: “In your mid-30s and all of a sudden you are finding yourself not having the adoration...

“You’re not needed, ‘What am I doing?, where am I going?’.”

It emerged on Sunday that former

England BBC pundit Murphy captain Rooney was taken into custody last month after arriving at Dulles Airport near Washington DC on a flight from Saudi Arabia.

He was arrested on a “profane swearing and intoxication in public” offence. Rooney, who earns £300,000 a week playing for DC United in the capital Washington, was fined £20 and CLAIMS of racism are being probed by the FA after a player was accused of making monkey noises at a Tottenham Ladies defender.

Renee Hector, 23, reported an opponent to the referee during their victory against Sheffield United on Sunday.

She claimed she had suffered racist abuse and later tweeted: “Such a shame that racism seems to be rising up again in football – I received some monkey noises today from an opposition player.”

The FA said it was “aware of an allegation of discriminatory abuse” and was “making enquiries into the matter”.

Sheffield United Women said: “We have already begun an investigation to determine the full facts.”

Kick It Out campaigner Troy Townsend said: “We need to get a grip and quick – it’s getting out of control.” ordered to pay £71.50 costs. He was pictured in the city yesterday for the first time since the news of his arrest.

Asked how he was, he said: “I’m good, thank you.”

He lives in nearby Bethesda, Maryland, with wife Coleen, 32, and their four children.

Rooney’s spokesman said the footballer was “disorientated” at the airport after having sleeping pills and “some alcohol” during the flight.

In 2017, Rooney was banned from the road for two years after being arrested for drink driving in Wilmslow, Cheshire.
