May: I don’t hang out with the other two.. I don’t miss them

Grand Tour star lifts lid on life off set

GRAND Tour stars James May, Jeremy Clarkson and Richard Hammond clearly have a chemistry on screen, but it seems they have little to do with each other off it.

And when the trio do get together, they get on each others’ nerves.

That’s according to May, who revealed the presenters do not hang out off set, drop into one another’s homes or even swap texts.

He said: “Some people think we live in big house together with our cars a parked outside. But that’s nonsense. We don’t really hang out with each other.

“We don’t speak or text on a weekly basis because we don’t need to. I don’t miss them. We get p***ed off with each other, of course. But we are not as bad as Fleetwood Mac. It’s not a prerequisite to doing this show that we are mates off-screen. This is common with rock bands and the cast of long-running dramas. “I think all the people in Friends hate each other…the Goodies as well.” But despite that, May May, Clarkson and Hammond insisted that if one of the three former Top Gear presenters fell ill or died, they would not get a replacement.

He added: “If Jeremy died we probably wouldn’t carry on. We’d just give it up.

“But if I died they wouldn’t give a s*** and would carry on.”

His pal Clarkson was asked by Radio Times if he had heard of new Top Gear host Paddy McGuinness and replied: “No. The IRA guy? No idea” – referring to late Sinn Fein politician Martin.

■ The Grand Tour new series starts January 18 on Amazon Prime Video.
