Don’t be taken in by NHS sweetener

-

■ Theresa May has got her landmark bid to boost the NHS wrong.

It seems our hapless Prime Minister talks big where money is concerned, but her so-called blueprint does nothing to alleviate the staffing shortage of the NHS which needs an extra 40,000 nurses, 6,000 GPs and 3,100 beds (Mirror, Jan 8). Instead, we’ll get smart phone appointments and online consultations.

This useless Government can’t sort out Brexit, while every vital public service has had staff cuts under the Tories. It is no use throwing money at a problem if you haven’t got the staff to run things. Dave Mellor, Warrington, Cheshire

■ The Tories are a total shambles and suddenly they have found billions of pounds to transform the NHS after years of starving our nation’s greatest asset of funds. How remarkable that they are on their uppers and are about to start promising sweeteners with a General Election becoming more and more likely in the months ahead. Don’t be taken in by this carrot-dangling – they are same selfserving Tories they’ve always been and are not to be trusted. Cliff Butler, Denton Manchester

■ In my view the new NHS funding announced is just a blatant attempt to “fatten up” certain parts of the health service to make them ripe for selling off. Why would the Tories change the habit of a lifetime when they have opposed the NHS ever since its conception 71 years ago? I’m afraid this is nothing but a smokescreen and the NHS is certainly not safe in Tory hands. Brian Scully, Wigan

■ The Tories’ 10-year plan for the NHS is just a cynical precursor as the Brexit deal comes crashing down.

When we are left with the choice between a second referendum or a General Election, the Tories will point to the “jam tomorrow” they are planning for the NHS.

However, the people have had enough of the worst Government in modern times.

JR Sedgwick, Tamworth, Staffs

■ Theresa May has launched another of her famous diversions with the NHS to be given an extra £20billion over the next 10 years. But it needs the money now – if spread over this time it’ll be barely enough to keep it running.

This is just another ploy to divert attention from the Brexit debacle and nobody should be taken in. Alan Sixsmith, Barnsley South Yorks

■ The new proposals for the NHS won’t work because the Tories have denied the service money over the past eight years. Now they say there will still have to be savings.

I suggest they start with the managers. I think the public would be astounded at the number of people on salaries of £80,000 and above.

Keith Williams, Gwynedd

■ While it’s good the Government is giving the NHS more money in order to save half a million lives over the coming years, let’s not forget they have starved the health service for the past eight years. More staff are needed – and what about the people who’ve already died due to the cuts?
