This week campaigner and food writer Heather Mills talks to us about mind over matter

We are now 10 days into the new year, and most of us will have already given up at least half of our resolutions.

The main ones we make tend to be the promise of a dry January, binning cigarettes or committing to a new fitness routine.

Giving up can be down to a number of reasons – stress, temptation, lack of willpower, laziness, being too busy or putting the kids first. And it’s always easy to make resolutions after New Year celebrations because most of us drank too much and never want to touch alcohol again.

But, if you’re like me and have your’s or someone else’s birthday coming up (I’m 51 on Saturday), how do you explain you don’t want to drink while pouring wine for everyone else?

There is something strange about how uncomfortable many people feel if they are drinking and you are not. I saw it a lot during my skiing days. Getting up at 4am to fly down a mountain at 150kph at 6.30am meant there was no way you could have alcohol in your system.

So if you have given up on your resolutions already, start again and go the whole way.

First, try replacing that evening beer with a healthier one. Try

Brass Castle

Brewery at brasscastle.co.uk where all beers are vegan and gluten free. They even do alcohol free beers for dry January. And if you prefer wine, non-alcoholic ones are all down to taste preference, so do your research.

Some of you may be trying out Veganuary. If so, look into alternative meat, fish and dairy-free products, like those you can find at VBites.com.

Fitness wise, generally I find it’s not going to happen unless it’s over and done with in the morning. I have lots to do so I exercise at 5am when the house is asleep. Keeping fit over 30 is hard, but we have to simply get on with it.

And if you’re desperate to give up smoking, before lighting up, make a promise to jog round the block or do 20 press-ups. If you stick to this, you may find the last thing you crave is having a cigarette.

So, let 2019 be the year you make time to love your body and yourself too.

Exercise won’t happen unless you do it in the morning
