POLICE are probing the sex assault claims made against monster Levi Bellfield after TV drama Manhunt.

Scotland Yard said it is assessing allegations from a number of women.

The Mirror told on Wednesday how Colin Sutton, the officer who snared Bellfield, revealed three women got in touch with him after the ITV drama began on Sunday to say they were targeted by the serial killer.

Scotland Yard said: “The Met has been made aware of... allegations following recent TV series Manhunt. These will be assessed by officers from the Child Abuse and Sexual Offences command.”

Retired detective chief inspector Mr Sutton, played by Martin Clunes in the series, said there was “little doubt” some of Bellfield’s victims had still not come forward. Manhunt, which finished on Tuesday, is based on Mr Sutton’s book.

The drama followed the then Met police officer and his team as they linked the 2004 hammer murder of French student Amelie Delagrange, 22, in Twickenham, South West London, with the 2003 killing of Marsha McDonnell, 19, and the 2002 murder of Milly Dowler, 13.

Mr Sutton said Catherine Harvey, 33, Top, Martin in series. Bellfield. Inset, Mirror told him after Manhunt was screened that Bellfield tried to lure her into his car in 2002 aged 17. She said Bellfield “was really intimidating... I was terrified”.

Bellfield was found guilty in 2008 of murdering Amelie and Marsha.

In 2011 he was convicted of abducting and murdering Milly. Bellfield, 50, has twice been handed a whole life sentence.
