Self-employed Andrew Clark, 51, had kept the lucky ticket behind the sun visor of his battered van for six weeks.

Plumber Gordon Jackson, 68, said: “Andy is a very conscientious bloke... He’s going to honour the jobs he’s started.

“If it was me, I’d say, ‘Look, I’m very sorry but I’ve won the lottery and I won’t be doing the work’.

“But he’s going to finish the jobs because he is an honest guy, a good bloke. He’s a good lad, dead straight. Fair play to the guy.

“I’m really pleased the money’s gone to somebody who works for a living.”

According to friends, Andy plans to “manage” all outstanding work, meaning he will subcontract other tradesman to finish off the jobs for him.

The grandad-of-three did not check his numbers until six weeks after buying his winning ticket for the November 2 draw.

He and partner Trish Fairhurst, 51, went public over the £76,369,806 win, before Christmas.

The couple, who met online four years ago, have already started making good on their pledge to share their good fortune with “all the family”. Yesterday a brand-new £40,000 Range Rover and £50,000 BMW M3 stood outside the home of Andy’s son Jamie.

The 30-year-old and his family live in a modest £200,000, semi-detached, three-bedroom house in Rushden, Northants.

On December 30 he uploaded a photo of the gleaming black BMW on to his Facebook profile.

One friend wrote: “Fair play to you, mate, I’m happy for you.”

And Jamie replied: “Thanks, mate appreciate it.”
