OLD-FASHIONED VALUE (FOR MONEY)

Pulis will not waste owner’s cash as he stresses respect is vital to him at Boro

- BY SIMON BIRD

TONY PULIS is pledging to revive Boro with “old-fashioned” values.

The Middlesbrough boss insists his job is safe and he has a good relationship with owner Steve Gibson – and will not waste his money.

Pulis goes to Birmingham today with Boro well placed to seal a top-six finish, but after a year in charge says he needs time to rebuild at all levels of the club.

Pulis said: “I still believe in a lot of good oldfashioned values and I do think anyone will ever change me in that respect.

“I think they’re sound. They were sound 50 years ago and they’re sound today. Respect for people who employ you, respect for people you work with, respect for the job you’re doing is enormous for me. I adhere to those principles.”

After a wobble over Christmas, Pulis faced criticism from some Boro fans, but insists his relationship is solid with Gibson.

He added: “We’ve got a good relationship. He’s a decent person, a decent man.

“I don’t think he’s concerned with anything other than trying to improve this football club in every way. I think he took a massive hit last year personally and that has knocked him a bit,

“We, the club, need a bit of time. We’ve done fabulously, the players have done fabulously, but we need time to build it.

“Sometimes you can do it immediately and sometimes you can’t. Fingers crossed, we’ll get two or three players in so we can have a right crack at winning promotion this year.”

Pulis has missed out on a couple of deals in the past week, but will only sign stars who want to come to Boro and make a difference – not just for a pay rise.

He added: “There’s a couple that have moved away from us. We are certainly not going to get involved in wasting loads of money on people who would maybe be coming for the wrong reasons.”
