Breastfeed in chapel - Pope

- BY LUCY THORNTON

THE Pope urged mums at a Sistine Chapel mass to breastfeed their babies if they got hungry.

Pope Francis said: “The ceremony is a little long. You mothers, go ahead and breastfeed without fear.”

He baptised about 30 children at the service in Vatican City on Sunday. A BRITISH woman accused of killing her husband could be spared the death penalty as prosecutors are reconsidering her charge.

Samantha Jones, 52, is awaiting trial in Malaysia for murder with intent.

But the prosecutors’ revelation yesterday means she may be charged with manslaughter, which does not carry the penalty of death by hanging.

Lawyer Sangeet Kaur Deo said the brief hearing had given Samantha “real hope”.

She said: “We went to court again and the prosecution told me they now have all the documents, including the postmortem, and would be reconsidering the charge.

“I haven’t seen the postmortem myself yet, but when they have decided I will get the full file.”

She added of Samantha’s reaction: “She was shocked at first but so relieved. It has been terrifying for her and this has given her real hope. It is good news and came as a surprise to me.” Samantha has been locked up since October, after her husband John, 63, was fatally stabbed at their home on Langkawi island. They moved there in 2007. The ex-insurance clerk, of Somerset, is accused of stabbing John once during a “quarrel”. But Sangeet claims Samantha suffered years of domestic abuse during their 17-year marriage.

She previously said of the night of John’s death: “He came home completely drunk, and she feared for her safety. There was a struggle and he was being violent. “He punched her all over. It’s unclear what happened next.” The lawyer said she is still putting together evidence, taking statements from witnesses who claim Samantha was “living in hell in paradise”. The case has been adjourned until next month. NEWS Sangeet Kaur Deo
