Brexit’s made us a laughing stock

-

■ As the Brexit chaos deepens, when you dig down and find the history of leaving the EU it all comes from the Tory Right. They hated the inclusion of the Social Chapter, setting out the broad social policy objectives on living and working conditions.

If there is anyone out there with even a shred of socialism in their veins, they need to look again at what Brexit means. It is really a right-wing way to steal your country.

So, what is wrong with another referendum? If you buy a washing machine or insurance policy you are allowed a cooling off period – so why not chuck out a dud Brexit?

Tony Blake, Bristol

■ As a member of the Labour Party, I am totally opposed to a second referendum. It seems the party has become a Remain party, totally going against the wishes of the majority who voted to leave the EU. If they continue along this line they will lose a lot of support in large areas of the country. If an election is called and they lose this support, the only remain they’re likely to get is remaining in opposition.

Errol Tollett, Coventry

■ For once, Parliament really has its dander up. I am getting close to having some respect for an institution that I have thought of for so long as toothless. It really appears that the House of Commons and, I am guessing, the Lords as well, are going to be responsible enough to prevent catastrophe. We shall see over the next week or so, but I am so hoping that my dim view of Parliament will be proved wrong. Janet Mather, Manchester

■ Is it not ironic that Members of Parliament are now using the slogan “take back control” in pursuit of their objective to frustrate Brexit, in defiance of the democratically expressed will of the British people?

MPs instead wish to surrender permanently and irrevocably their sovereignty to an, anti-democratic bureaucracy.

John Lowry, Warrington

■ What is the point of democracy if, in the end, the vested interests of the elite MPs can cancel out the will of the people?

We can have a vote as long as we vote the way the MPs want us to who, if it needs saying, had only one vote in the referendum the same as everyone else? If the liberal remainers had won we would not be having this pathetic anti-democratic battle with the EU thugs of this country.

The time is coming when we need a change in the democratic process. The time is coming when we need to rid ourselves of the enslavement of the MP system. Just who do these people think they are?

JH Moffatt, Bredbury

Gtr Manchester

■ I really hope Jeremy Corbyn steps up and delivers a no-confidence vote as soon as possible.

The Brexit farce has made Britain the laughing stock of the world. We need a General Election to make sure that this country gets back on track as soon as possible.

E Shaw, Totnes, Devon

■ The longer this fiasco with Brexit continues, the worse it is for the country.

I think MPs will send the PM back to Brussels to renegotiate the deal. However, what we desperately need is a second referendum which, I don’t think will happen and, worst of all, it’ll keep dragging on and Theresa May will somehow cling onto power.
