IAN HYLAND on last night’s telly

Cold Feet, ITV: ★★★★

I’m reluctant to shower praise on ITV for doing something that was so obvious even I had suggested it. But we should give the schedulers some credit for swallowing their pride and moving Cold Feet back to Monday nights. WHERE IT BELONGS.

Don’t ask me to explain why. When you know something feels right, it just feels right.

And this felt very right from the minute this series eight opener kicked off with a surprise wedding.

I was sucked in by the intrigue even though common sense was telling me there was no way any of the main characters would be having a surprise wedding this early in the series. In the end it turned out to be one of the bit part players Ramona – but I didn’t work that out until she actually stepped out of the bridal car.

Ramona’s husband-to-be was a Spanish count, and if you think the writer Mike Bullen only made him a count so he could have some fun with Ramona’s pronunciation of that word then you are dead right. He actually did it twice – and the second time was even funnier than the first.

There were plenty of other laughs to be had including a savage case of art imitating life involving the hair crimes of Jimmy Nesbitt’s character Adam.

In real life Jimmy recently revealed he’d had hair transplants to help him win acting roles.

In Cold Feet, Adam had (over)dyed his hair so that he could pull young women. Given the way Adam crashed and burned last night with a beautiful young coffee shop barista (who, by the way, was way out of his league in any scenario) you would have to say Jimmy has so far seen a better return on his investment.
