IAN HYLAND W

on last night’s TV

-

EastEnders, BBC1: ★★★ ith so many other things to get annoyed about these days, I actually surprised myself with how vexed I was by last night’s EastEnders.

Let me explain. You know how Walford is a small place where everyone knows each other, right? And you know how Big Mo is famous for her dodgy, money-making schemes?

So why did she choose the very public entrance to Walford East station for the scene of her latest scam – begging for cash for the Tube fare to take “ill” grandson Tommy to hospital?

Obviously, I already know the answer. It would have been costly and problematic for the production to go on location to another Tube station.

I can accept that. What I can’t accept is the “sod it, it’ll do” attitude that pervades the BBC’s flagship serial drama at moments like this.

It’s the same attitude that allows secret lovers Sharon and Keanu to have a blazing heartto-heart outside Kathy’s night café – where anyone could walk by and see and hear them. Including Sharon’s hubby Phil.

I mean, I know it’s only soap. I’m also aware there’s such a thing as dramatic licence. Surely though, the producers could at least summon up the effort to make things even a little more credible.

Speaking of which, who was that mug who pulled some scrunched-up notes out of his pocket and simply handed them over to Mo, no questions asked? There must have been the best part of £15 there, mate. Which hospital did you think Mo was taking Tommy to? Watford General?

Give cash, so the BBC can film on location
