STOKES A DOUBT WITH SORE HEEL AS ENGLAND BID TO AVOID WHITEWASH

- FROM DEAN WILSON in St Lucia @CricketMirror

BEN STOKES gave England an injury scare after sitting out nets in St Lucia with a bruised heel.

drinks and delivering towels to the batsmen.

Foakes is still feeling some discomfort from the knock his hand took from Shannon Gabriel in Antigua, while Woakes’ knee looks set to keep him on the sidelines.

It means that England could end up recalling opener Keaton Jennings as well as speedster Mark Wood to try to fill the gaps that a Stokes injury could cause.

First and foremost though, England must find a way to solve their batting crisis and put in a performance in response to the accusation from coach Trevor Bayliss that they lacked “guts and determination and the will to fight” in the first two Tests.

“Of course it stings,” admitted vice-captain Jos Buttler. “I think as a player when those kind of things are questioned it can hurt your pride so you want to prove him wrong.

“Watching an innings such as Darren Bravo’s, who showed lots of guts and courage on a tough wicket to take lots of blows, sometimes that is what it takes.

“That is a good example of a way of playing and being brave in that sense. But these are things in the past certain guys have shown that.

“The guts, courage and determination of the group is very strong. We have not been good enough to show that at times on this tour. Looking at this week we will be looking to show lots more of that.”
