Tigers hero inflicts more misery on sorry Hull

-

PAUL McSHANE turned in another all-action show to make it two wins from two for the Tigers.

But their victory spelled more bad news for Hull, who have now lost 13 games on the trot.

Lee Radford’s men, who last tasted victory against Widnes in June last year, played well. But they badly need a ruthless streak if they are to kill off opponents.

The Tigers were rocked by news that Jamie Ellis had become their second half-back after Luke Gale to face a lengthy injury lay-off.

But just as in their opening win over Catalans last week, Cas shrugged off the setback.

They came out firing, sensing that Hull’s nerves might be frayed by their last-minute defeat at Hull KR last week.

It worked with Michael Shenton drawing first blood after five minutes when young half-back Jake Trueman put him over.

Jesse Sene-Lefao dampened the mood of the home fans even further when he touched down a McShane grubber for a 10-0 lead.

Hull needed inspiration and it came from Joe Westerman, playing his first game since a knee injury last July.

He dummied his way over from close range and it was just the boost they required.

Suddenly the Tigers were on the back foot and a superb cross-field kick by Marc Sneyd put Jake Connor over for try No.2.

Sneyd converted both for a 12-10 lead and only a desperate ankle tap by Peter Mata’utia stopped the full-back grabbing a try of his own.

Cas responded with a second try from Shenton at the end of the first half. McShane (circle) missed his second conversion attempt in three and with regular kicker Gale out all season, it is a problem that could keep hurting them. The two-point lead still gave the Tigers the lift they needed after their earlier wobble and they came out for the second half in mean mood. Jamie Shaul denied Alex Foster, but Cas were soon in for the kill again with James Clare darting over in the corner. Hooker McShane missed the conversion attempt again, but was spot on with the extras minutes later after his grubber put Junior Moors in for their fifth try. Hull refused to buckle and Jordan Lane crossed with Sneyd adding a third kick.

The sides slugged each other to a standstill in the final quarter with the Tigers doing just enough.
