WE PREDICT A N0-DEAL RIOT
Whitehall ‘making street chaos plan’
PREPARATIONS are being made for “riots in the streets” under a no-deal Brexit, a former civil servant chief has claimed.
Lord Kerslake said planning was under way in Whitehall, and demanded a second EU referendum.
Calling for a no-deal departure to be ruled out, he said: “We shouldn’t be preparing for riots in the streets, which is what we are doing.
“There are many civil servants and local government workers spending significant time not on the jobs they’re paid to do, but preparing for this possibility.” No10 dismissed the claim but added: “We are making sensible preparation for all scenarios.”
Asked about stockpiling food, a spokeswoman said the UK had “a high level of food security built on a range of sources”.
A “Project After” group – including figures from the Treasury, Cabinet Office and Departments for Business
PREP CLAIM Lord Kerslake and International Trade – is planning tax cuts to fuel a no-deal economy. Other options are said to include cutting tariffs and boosting investment. A source said: “It’s basically a Doomsday list of economic levers.” It comes ahead of Monday’s talks with EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier, who warned: “The EU will not reopen the Withdrawal Agreement.” Ex-Shadow Chancellor Chris Leslie hinted at quitting Labour over its EU policy. He said of party members resigning: “Do I understand they’re being driven to the edge? I do.”
