Fed up with weather.. and tortillas

- BY CHRISTOPHER BUCKTIN US Editor

A DERELICT bank thought to have stored the Crown Jewels in the Second World War has sold for £211,000 in Chard, Somerset. SIR Nick Clegg’s millionaire wife has complained about her new life in the US’s most expensive region.

Just days after arriving at their new five-bedroom, £7million Silicon Valley home, in California, Miriam Gonzalez Durantez took to Instagram to moan that the pair’s American dream had become something of a nightmare.

It comes despite

Sir Nick taking a reported £15million -a-year job at nearby Facebook. Lady Clegg wrote: “One week and a half in California and I already had to fill in 63 registration forms. Next time any Brexiteers complain about European bureaucracy, just point them to the US...”

She added a few days later: “Oh dear, this is what I have become. What other country calls foreigners ‘aliens’?”

Lady Clegg also criticised US banks which still use cheques, writing: “You are not going to believe this. In Silicon Valley, the cradle of crypto-currencies, they still use checks.”

She was horrified to discover a local shop was selling Spanish tortilla in tins. “There should be an International Convention forbidding treating tortillas like this,” she said, alongside a picture.

On another pic showing tinned Heinz spaghetti, she wrote: “Found this in the ‘British corner’ of my local US supermarket – I still remember first time I visited the UK as a student and was served this. Brexiteers would be proud.”

The Spanish-born lawyer, 50, also moaned about hail storms in California saying, “I was told it was always sunny”. Lady Clegg writes a recipe blog and runs charity Inspiring Girls International.

The couple’s new home is in Atherton, a mile from Facebook HQ, the most expensive area in the country. Sir Nick will be working as Vice President of Global Affairs. The pair have three sons, aged 16, 14 and nine.

Their luxury house has a large kitchen with marble worktops and an island seating area, a separate dining room and library.

The one-acre garden has a hot tub, a swimming pool and a large patio. LUXURIOUS The Cleggs’ £7million home
