THE family of a man arrested over missing student Libby Squire have insisted he is innocent and had only stopped to help her.

Butcher Pawel Relowicz, 24, is being questioned by police in connection with the disappearance of 21-year-old Libby, who has not been seen for more than a week.

But his sister, Paulina Szymanska, 28, said: “I don’t believe my brother could do it. We were raised to be good people. He was driving and he stopped because he noticed a girl crying.”

She added: “She asked him to take her home, so he put her address into his satnav and wanted to do just that.”

Last night it emerged police are examining CCTV footage taken just a few feet from a roadside bench where Libby was seen sitting before she vanished.

Det Supt Matt Hutchinson said last night: “There have been hundreds of hours of CCTV footage viewed as part of our investigation.

“There are various lines of inquiry we have investigated and are following up in connection to CCTV footage.”

Mr Relowicz, a married dad of two, originally from Poland, was arrested on Wednesday night at his rented home in Hull, East Yorks, less than half a mile from where Libby vanished.

He works at Karro Food Group, in Malton, North Yorks, where he is believed to have met his future wife, Jagoda, 24, who he married last June. He is originally from Chelmza, in Poland, and moved to the UK in 2014.

Police were yesterday given more time to question him on suspicion of abducting the philosophy student.

His mum, Marzena Relowicz, 52, said: “I know in my heart that Pawel did not do anything to this girl.

“My heart is breaking over this and I feel so sad for the girl’s parents and what they are going through. I can’t imagine their pain. If I could go to England, I would kneel before them and pray she is found.”

The Polish mum-ofeight said her son baked cakes and was “a religious boy”.

Paulina added: “We come from a big, poor, but wonderful family. He could never do such a thing.”

University of Hull student Libby vanished after a nightclub in the city turned her away on Thursday last week for being too drunk. Friends put her in a taxi at 11.30pm. But after arriving at her home, Libby wandered off. She was seen sitting on a bench nearby at 11.45pm. Shortly after midnight, police believe she was on a street leading to a nearby park.

Libby’s parents Lisa, 48, and Russell, 53, travelled to Hull from their home in High Wycombe, Bucks, and are being cared for by specialist officers.

Pictures of Libby will be displayed on 20 digital screens around Hull this weekend as the search continues.
