Whether bond is gone or not, there will be no winner
THE whole sorry Markle debacle has now surely reached the end of the line. The final nail in the coffin of the fractured relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her father – but how many times have we heard that?
On the face of it, the revelations in Meghan’s letter make it clear how heartbroken she is after such huge embarrassment heaped on her by her dad, Thomas.
For his part, he says he decided to reveal the letter – despite insisting on multiple previous occasions that he’d had no word from Meghan since her wedding – after her friends launched an “attack” on him last week.
Meghan is said to have sanctioned a puff piece from five pals who spoke to a US magazine to “fight her corner”. But in between them making her sound like a cross between Mother Theresa and Mary Poppins, as well as angering Palace press officers kept in the dark until it was in print, the added catastrophe is it is now clear Thomas has no intention of respecting her wishes.
It’s fair to suggest Meghan must have known, deep down, her letter would be published – perhaps why she chose to reproduce huge passages of her previous note.
However interested you may or may not be in the whole affair, it should not be forgotten that beyond the headlines, this is a tragic tale of the loss of trust and love between a daughter and her father and, regardless of who shouts the loudest, there will be no winners.
