HOW CAN I COPE WITH EXAMS?

-

Dear Coleen

I’m really hoping you can give some good advice to all the young people, including me, who are currently doing mock and actual GCSE exams.

Me and lots of my friends are struggling to cope with the demands placed on us – how can we revise, stay calm and get through it all?

I would appreciate your words of wisdom!

Coleen says

Well, it’s been a very long time since I sat exams, but I’ve been through it in recent times with my three kids, so I understand what a stressful time it is and how overwhelming it can feel.

First of all, I’d draw up a realistic revision timetable. Don’t set yourself crazy goals like three hours studying straight after school when you’ll be tired and you’re not going to take it all in. You have to make sure you build in regular breaks. And turn your phone off!

Also, don’t study too late, so you can’t switch off your brain when it comes to bedtime – sleep is very important. Make sure you’re fuelling your body well, too. Eat well and drink enough water to feed your brain and your energy levels.

Having down-time is important – doing something you find fun or relaxing will give your mind a rest, so you feel ready to get back to studying.

And, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. I’ve always said to my kids, “You can only do your best” and that’s all anyone can expect of you – and all you can expect of yourself too.

Good luck.
