Gang who were ‘on a caper’ jailed for out-of-control vehicle’s carnage

A GANG who fled a scene of carnage after killing a pedestrian and hitting a house when they lost control of a stolen lorry have been jailed.

Jacqueline Wileman, 58, was on her regular power-walk when the eighttonne­r hit her, ploughed into three cars and smashed into the side of the home.

Driver Karn Hill, 23, was doing 55mph with David Mellor, 48, Alan Mawhinney, 53, and Wayne Carroll, 29, in Brierley, near Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

Sheffield crown court heard they had spent hours laughing and joking in the lorry while it was driven dangerousl­y.

Judge Jeremy Richardson QC told them: “You gave not a thought to the safety of others whilst you executed you thought was a caper. It is nothing short of chance more people were not killed or maimed.”

Before the trial, Hill, of Cudworth, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and got 10-and-a-half years. The others denied the same charge but were convicted by a jury. Mellor, of Worswhat RECKLESS Karn Hill, Wayne Carroll, Alan Mawhinney and David Mellor were all jailed POPULAR TV’s John Inman ITEMS from the estate of the late comedy actor John Inman have sold for £19,000, more than nine times the estimated price.

The star, who died in 2007, played an assistant in classic BBC sitcom Are You Being Served? for 13 years and was famous for his “I’m free!” catchphras­e.

One key lot was a panto outfit that topped £6,000 at the sale in Thatcham, Berks. “The value is testament to John’s status,” said auctioneer David Martin.
