It’s tame and a shame, AJ
ANTHONY JOSHUA’S pulling power just about remains strong enough to reel in the punters regardless of his opponent.
His American debut, in Madison Square Garden, would draw a crowd if he was fighting a tailor’s dummy.
And, according to Joshua, a tailor’s dummy would only be marginally less dangerous and durable than Jarrell Miller (below).
Aside from the trash talk, Joshua gave a perceptive analysis of Miller’s ability and chances.
“He’s been knocked out seven times, he’s the softest puncher in the heavyweight division.
“He’s done nothing as a fighter in the amateur ranks or as a professional. And he will come up against a real champion.
“There is no fairytale story – the facts and stats show I will beat Miller and knock him out. “That is the truth in plain sight.” Most seasoned fight judges would agree. Miller might be unbeaten but this is a mismatch.
For Joshua’s introduction to fighting in the States, that might be just about acceptable.
But for one night only.
Tyson Fury’s £80million deal with ESPN muddies the waters, especially if it jeopardises the rematch with Deontay Wilder, but the three big names of the division need to come up with some sort of schedule that is more enticing than Joshua versus a tailor’s dummy.
Otherwise, the glitz, glamour and irresistible allure that has returned to the heavyweight scene will soon evaporate again.
