Top temperatur­e of 18.8C has us flocking to soak up winter sun

TEMPERATUR­ES hit a record February high for one part of the UK as people flocked to beaches and parks to soak up the winter sun.

Yesterday’s top temperatur­e of 18.8C was recorded in a west coast beauty spot in Wales.

Gogerddan in Cardigansh­ire experience­d the warmest February day in Wales since 1990, with the high just behind the UK record of 19.7C in Greenwich, South London in 1998.

London enjoyed a balmy 17C with Brighton peaking at 13C.

The average UK temperatur­e was 15C, around 8C higher than the average for February.

Most of the country was sunny and very mild but coastal areas were cooler. While the previous Welsh record of 18.6C set in the village of Felindre in the far north of Swansea took 29 years to break, forecaster­s forethe said the new temperatur­e high may be surpassed assed again before the month is out.

The Met Office’s Becky Mitchell l said: “It could possibly get warmer still. We’re looking at similar temperatur­es s over the next few days.”

Yesterday started off foggy in many places, with the Met Office issuing a yellow warning for parts of England and Wales.

It was slow to clear across parts of the Midlands, Yorkshire and the east of Northern Ireland.

Today will almost be a carbon copy of yesterday, with fog patches at first followed by another dry and sunny day for many.

Tue sday and Wednesday are expected to stay dry, sunny and very mild by day, but nights will be chilly with some fog. Thursday will be cooler as patchy rain spreads eastwards. And temperatur­es will be several degrees cooler from March 8 to 22.

The Met Office said: “There are signals for Atlantic fronts to cross the whole of the UK, bringing wet and windy weather to many parts, but intermitte­nt drier spells elsewhere.

“Milder conditions remain more likely, perhaps with occasional colder spells which could bring overnight frosts.

“The best chance of fine and dry weather with sunshine will be in the south and east.”

The mild weather is a marked contrast to the snow brought by the Beast from the East last year.
