‘I Don’t Like Mondays’ killer in bid for freedom

I felt really scared – like she would come after me. I felt like letting this person out of her cage would harm my family even more.” Christy Buell, who with her friend Cam Miller was hit by several of Spencer’s bullets, also objects to her release. She was pretending to ice-skate on the frosty grass waiting for the school bell when the killer targeted her.
Shot in the abdomen and buttocks, she spent 42 days in the hospital and needed two operations.
Christy told the Mirror: “It’s something that has never left. I will always oppose Spencer’s release.”
Victim Mary Rintoul is a lone voice in defending Spencer. After 13 years working in psychiatry, she points to the alleged abuse the killer suffered at the hands of her father and a dysfunctional upbringing.
She says: “Reading the reports and examining what was done to her, I don’t condone what she did, but I kind of understand why she might have chosen that path.” Mary says every time there is a school massacre painful memories flood back.
“The first big school shooting after mine was Columbine. I cried for a week. I knew what those kids were going through.”
Her husband Neil only discovered Mary’s part in the shooting on one of their first dates in 1993.
As they returned from a restaurant, lead singer Bob Geldof ’s I Don’t Like Mondays started playing on the radio.
