BIG CHILL Clearing snow in Cumbria STRUGGLE Plane at Leeds-Bradford THE full fury of Storm Freya was revealed yesterday as many people battled snowfalls, transport chaos and widespread structural damage caused by the chilling 75mph winds.

And there will be more heavy rain and high winds this week, forecasters warn.

On Sunday, the icy gales felled trees, damaged property and closed many roads to high-sided traffic.

Although the Met Office yesterday confirmed that Freya had passed into the North Sea, easing winds in the East, it warned of more unsettled conditions.

A spokesman said: “The jet stream is bringing us a more unsettled pattern.

“That pattern is on repeat for the next few days and indeed into the weekend.”

Residents had to clear snow which fell in Cumbria near the Northumberland border early yesterday. Western and southern parts of the UK bore the brunt of Freya’s strong winds, with a top speed of 76mph recorded at Mumbles Head in West Glamorgan at 6pm on Sunday.

The highest speed recorded in England was 70mph at Emley Moor, West Yorkshire, around 30 miles from Leeds-Bradford Airport, where pilots’ skills were once again tested by strong cross-winds.

There remains a risk of more rain, wind, sleet and snow in areas of high ground in the North.

The rain will move into Northern Ireland, northern England and Scotland today, with other areas seeing sunnier spells giving way to cloud and rain in the South-West later. The outlook for tomorrow and Thursday includes occasional heavy rain and strong winds. Friday is expected to be drier and brighter, with sunny spells. Road cleared near Northumberland
