May’s money tree is political poison

-

■ It appears the only way the Prime Minister can get votes is by offering money. First the DUP and now by trying to bribe Labour MPs with a handout to the poorer areas of the country that voted for Brexit.

Would she be doing this if she didn’t need backing for her deal? Unlikely. What a shambles this Government is – they must be the worst on record.

May is also responsible for the state of the police force with her savage cuts when she was Home Secretary. Indeed, this Tory Government has one policy – sell it or cut it.

The Bedroom Tax, prison service, probation service, NHS, Universal Credit, Royal Mail, the list of mismanagement is endless. And some still vote Tory.

Vince McAllister, Ely, Cambs

■ Offering handouts to MPs in certain areas in order to win support for May’s rotten deal is a new low even for the Tory Party. Instead of the Attorney General running around the EU trying to change the wording on the Irish backstop, he should do his job to ensure the Prime Minister and Cabinet are investigated for perverting our democracy. Or has this kind of corruption become acceptable?

George Rowe, Sunderland

■ One question with regards to the so-called Brexit bribes, where is the magic money tree to give £1.6billion to those areas? Besides which, this is over six years. Funds should have been made available nine years ago when the Tories first came to power, not now when Theresa May needs votes. In my view, this is quite clearly a bribe.

G Crawford, Medway, Kent

■ A sad indictment of how standards have plummeted since 2010 is that every crooked trick in the book has become acceptable and the norm for successive Tory governments. Money to the DUP to canvas for Leave in Northern Ireland and to keep May in power is brushed under the carpet, and now funds to Labour MPs to vote for her rejected Brexit deal. The Tories truly are morally defunct. Michael Elias Carmarthen

■ So, Theresa May has suddenly found £1.6billion down the back of the sofa. Not bad for a Government that keeps telling us austerity is the only way. Instead of trying to effectively bribe Labour MPs, why doesn’t she put this sum of money into the NHS?

Roy Cullen, Wigan

■ Any Northern Labour MP who even thinks for one second the Tories have the interests of their constituencies at heart should look at what they have done to their communities over the last nine years. Those towns have lost far more than May offers to replace. James Crisp

Solva, Pembrokeshire

■ Just when we thought the magic money tree only grew in Northern Ireland, it now sprouts in poorer areas of England. Someone must have been planting the seeds! Rob Horton, Sheffield

■ Imagine for one second... if Theresa May and her cronies hadn’t slashed budgets to public services, or demonised the poor and vulnerable, she would have the support that she so desperately needs now. Dave Wyness via Facebook
