Vegan sausage rolls ‘endanger the orangutan’

They use oil that causes deforestat­ion

GREGGS vegan sausage rolls contain a palm oil blamed for the mass deforestat­ion threatenin­g to wipe out Bornean orangutans.

The firm yesterday announced sales had topped £1billion for the first time, a 10% rise partly credited to the success of the £1 quorn snack.

TV host Piers Morgan, a vegan critic, posted a photo of orangutans, saying: “Sacrificed at the altar of @GreggsOffi­cialvegan sausage rolls.”

The Bornean orangutan RISK The Greggs snack, and orangutan in Borneo population more than halved from 1999 to 2015, with 70,000 to 100,000 remaining. Orangutans spend 95% of their lives in trees, but Indonesia’s forests are lost at a rate of a football pitch every 25 seconds. Greggs said: “We are committed to ensuring that where palm oil is present in our food and drinks, it is sourced from 100% sustainabl­e sources.” Dominika Piasecka, of The Vegan Society, said: “Both the Greggs meat and the vegan sausage rolls have palm oil.” ■ A vegan sweet potato and squash pie was named Supreme Champion at the British Pie Awards.
