Tories lead Britain in a race to the bottom

-

IT is Destiny Week for Britain. Brexit has finally destroyed the Conservative Party’s undeserved reputation for competence.

Our once-proud democracy has been turned into an idiocracy run by inept fools thanks to Theresa May’s woeful amateur-hour negotiating and the grandstanding, puffed-up Tory Brextremists, who still scream their dogmatic lies.

If Parliament adopts the PM’s bad deal or, worse, a no-deal exit, our nation’s decline into irrelevancy and intolerance will be accelerated.

If MPs do the right thing and go into extra time, there might be a chance to ask people if they really want to wreck Britain.

Pompous David Cameron lost a tactical referendum and his hopeless successor whinges that our European neighbours won’t reopen the Northern Ireland backstop she demanded. Brexit is the most expensive, ruinous divorce in history.

It is a disastrous symbol of nine years of calamitous Conservative misrule. And when Chancellor Philip Hammond delivers a spring statement on Wednesday he must be reminded that growth-crunching Tory austerity is costing the economy a fortune.

The total is £100billion, or north of £3,600 per household, experts at the New Economics Foundation calculate.

Self-defeating cuts sucked the life from a promising recovery bequeathed by Labour’s Gordon Brown.

Add £40billion of growth, which a Bank of England linchpin reckons Brexit uncertainty has lost us since 2016, and the Government’s own forecasts that Brexit will cost another £100billion to £240billion over the next 15 years, and the Tory bill quickly tots up to more than health, education, defence, housing and transport spending combined. Plastic patriots hiding behind misused flags are giving up control should an imperial Britain without an empire slip into irrelevancy. Incompetent’s incompetent Chris “Failing” Grayling is in bad company in May’s cabinet, when three Tory colleagues put up No Irish, No Blacks, No Muslims signs. Many ministers struggle to distinguish their backside from their elbow. All Trade Secretary Liam Fox has signed are air miles. Defence Secretary Gavin “Private Pike” Williamson is a human, two-legged stool.

It is a political tragedy that Labour is lagging in the polls, as anti-Semitism stops it from painting Islamophobic Tories as the Nasty Party. But staying strong, opposing Brexit, pressing for a people’s vote is Labour’s golden opportunity to lead. United it can stand, divided it falls.
