SELF-BELIEF IS WAT’S NEEDED FOR RED DEVILS

- BY JULIE STOTT TIGER TRY

IAN WATSON urged his beaten Red Devils to start believing that they are genuine contenders.

Salford started slowly, conceding tries to Nathan Massey and Jordan Rankin, and were then forced to play catch up. They rattled the Tigers by cutting the gap but Watson is convinced they could have won.

The head coach said: “Hopefully this can really kick us on and show that we are a serious team that can be contenders.

“Once we had the game in the balance we got on the front foot. But we have to learn to be patient instead of trying to chase the game.”Jake Bibby’s unconverted try made it 12-4 to the home side at half time and Cas again started stronger.

Greg Eden claimed his seventh try in six games but Salford’s belief was starting to grow and they got their reward.

Tries from Jansin Turgut and Joey Lussick cut the Tigers’ lead to two points but hooker Paul McShane, who was earlier sin-binned, steadied it for Cas.

He set up a crucial try for Jesse Sene-Lefao, with Rankin kicking his fourth goal from five kicks. A second late Bibby try for Salford failed to clinch victory.

Cas coach Daryl Powell said: “We gave away some soft tries but ultimately we won, which is important.”
