‘MISSING VAR COSTS SWANS’

- BY DAVID McDONNELL

SWANSEA skipper Mike van der Hoorn slammed the decision not to have VAR in operation for their FA Cup quarter-final.

The Swans were dumped out of the competition following two questionable decisions that could have gone their way had VAR been in use at the Liberty Stadium.

Replays showed the penalty won by Raheem Sterling for Manchester City was harsh, while Sergio Aguero’s late winner for the Premier League champions was offside.

A dejected Van der

Hoorn said: “I think their penalty was very soft. Ours from

Matt Grimes (right) was very clear, everybody could see that.

“But with theirs, you could see he didn’t touch the guy. For a foul, I think you need to touch the opponent and he didn’t do that.

“I think Aguero’s foot was offside. It’s top-team luck, maybe, but they pressed us and forced everything to win the game.

“Last year they had VAR. So in this situation for us it would have been a big help, as it cost us two goals. But it’s not there so we can’t do much about it.”

Told VAR was used in two of the FA Cup ties, but not at Swansea or Millwall’s game against Brighton, Van der Hoorn added: “That’s a bit weird. “I think you have to equal that. If you do it at one, you should have it at all games.

“For us, and even for City, it’s a big game – as we wanted to go to Wembley.

“Of course you need a bit of luck. But we gave everything. “We put bodies on the line and they were forcing us to make that tackle, to make that error. “They had chances, but it was one of those days that it might just have happened for us.”
