Superbugs on space station

-

SUPERBUGS have colonised the International Space Station and can turn harmless bacteria into dangerous germs with antibiotic resistance.

Extreme spaceflight also lowers a human’s ability to fight infection – a problem for longer trips such as to Mars. But scientists found a self-renewing coating, AGXX, that kills the bugs.

“The effects are similar to bleach, except it’s regenerating,” said Prof Elisabeth Grohmann, of Beuth University, Berlin. Stephen Mckears, 72, first noticed objects moving in his shed a month ago. The retired electrician noticed plastic clips appearing in an old ice-cream tub filled with peanuts which he keeps to feed the birds. Soon, metal objects began to accumulate.

Questioning his own sanity, Stephen emptied the tub each night, scattering the nuts and bolts across his shed, only to discover the mess was cleaned up again.

With the help of his neighbour Rodney Holbrook, 70, Stephen, set up a camera to catch the cleanfreak culprit red-handed.

The pair were shocked when the footage showed this adorable rodent busily tidying the shed.

Rodney, from Severn Beach, South Glos, said: “We thought it was a ghost at first. It’s amazing and it’s still busy doing it now.”
