The blame is all May’s

-

THERESA May had the chance last night to break the Brexit deadlock.

Instead, she delivered a dishonest statement that blamed everyone but herself for the crisis.

The Prime Minister took the dangerous and unworthy step of trying to pitch herself on the side of the people against Parliament.

She claimed that MPs were thwarting Brexit by refusing to make a decision but failed to mention she has repeatedly blocked calls for the Commons to hold a series of indicative votes so they could find a way forward.

She said voters were tired of the endless hold-ups, without admitting her dithering and inaction were the main cause of the delays.

An issue that should have been resolved weeks ago now rests on MPs having to make a decision against the tyranny of the clock.

The Mirror set out a sensible alternative for Brexit based on a Norway-style deal which could command a majority in the Commons.

Rather than test support for such an option, the PM has led the country to this cliff edge by blindly pursuing a deal already rejected twice.

It is a damning indictment of Mrs May’s handling of Brexit that with eight days before we could leave the EU, the world’s fifth biggest economy still has no idea what its trading relationship will be with its largest market.

A PM who put her country in such a position should have resigned. She and she alone is responsible for this national humiliation.
