SPENCER’S OLYMPIC SHOOT-OUT

- BY ALEX SPINK

BEN SPENCER will use Saturday’s Olympic Stadium clash with England rival Danny Care as a chance to stake his World Cup claim.

Spencer (above) helped Eddie Jones’ team grab a draw from the jaws of total humiliation against Scotland last week.

Now he plans to build on that six-minute cameo off the bench to prove he is a scrum-half worth taking to Japan.

Ben Youngs hogged the No.9 shirt throughout the Six Nations campaign, leaving Spencer, Care, Dan Robson and Richard Wigglesworth battling it out for the support role.

“I guess it’s all in the air and all to play for,” said the 26-year-old, who has run up a century of Premiership appearances for the English champions.

“There’s a big opportunity in this last block of the season.

“It’s always good to test yourself against the best in your position and Danny is a quality player.”

Saracens had planned to play the clash against Harlequins at Tottenham’s new stadium, but delays in its completion have forced a switch to West Ham.

England captain Owen Farrell has been given the week off and powerhouse prop Mako Vunipola is still a fortnight away from being fit.

But Sarries boss Mark McCall will give serious thought to recalling Maro Itoje after injury.

“There is no hangover from what happened against Scotland,” insisted Spencer.

“Although it’s a different team, you still always want to right wrongs from what has happened the week before.

“All the lads have come in raring to go and are ready to get stuck in.”
