THE humble mouse that became a global superstar has reached the ripe old age of 90. And even though Steamboat Willie, Walt Disney’s first short film featuring Mickey, was released in November 1928, that isn’t going to stop Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, from celebrating his birthday all the way through 2019.

And with the launch of some amazing new rides and attractions, Mickey’s milestone year is a great time to visit his homeland.

For instant wow factor, start your journey where the Disney fun and thrills first began at Magic Kingdom. Walking down Main Street towards Cinderella Castle is sure to delight all ages and the character meet-andgreets, classic rides and Happily

Ever After fireworks shows make this a favourite for Disney veterans and newcomers alike.

It really doesn’t matter if you’re a cynic who questions why Donald Duck wears

a towel round his waist after a shower but doesn’t own trousers. Or that you’re knee-high to one of the Seven Dwarfs. Because seeing this pink turreted castle will sprinkle your spirits with fairy dust – and may even inspire you to buy a pair of Mickey ears.

Believe me – everyone is wearing them, or Minnie ears, or Stitch, or ears shaped like a donut with a bite taken out! Novelty ears are big at WDW.

These days, Disney trips also start with downloading the Disney app. This will help you maximise your time at all six parks with GPS-enabled maps, and keep you up to date with attraction waiting times as well as schedules for fireworks and parades. Use it to select FastPass experiences too.

As part of the app registration process you’re asked to select your favourite Disney character. Don’t be surprised if, like me, you spend 30 seconds trying to decide, then type Mickey. Also useful is the Disney YEE-HAW Matt with Woody
