High council tax rise is a new low

-

■ Yet again there are to be massive council tax increases (Mirror, March 28). Not only have we had the burden for adult social care thrust upon us, we now have to shoulder added policing costs. The council tax is the largest burden for householders.

This Government is taxing the life out of every household in Britain.

It is time they got rid of the very expensive House of Lords and put Britain back on its feet with the millions this antiquated system has cost us.

The public need a break from the constant onslaught of tax rises.

■ Council tax bills go up by a massive 5.5%, but all the while the public is getting less value for money as the Tories continue to squeeze local authority budgets and vital services close down.

Is it any wonder we are seeing a huge increase in knife crime and gang culture when there aren’t enough police on the streets and youth services are being forced to shut because there aren’t enough funds?

■ I would dearly love to know how MPs can justify a further increase in their already inflated salaries while people are in dire straits trying to pay their hiked-up council tax bills.

It’s grossly unfair on poorer pensioners who are struggling to make ends meet. If the Treasury can

■ The Tory council tax rise will hit the low paid the most, given the small difference between high and low bands of properties.

The 5.5% average increase of councils all over the country will not cover the loss of government funding, so there will be more carnage for our public services. James Upton, via Facebook

■ Local taxes are rising because funding from central government has been slashed.

This is all part of the Tory plan to move the tax burden on to smaller shoulders.

Every change the Tories make is about reducing the burden on wealthier people and moving it onto poorer groups.

■ Is our council tax going up so that local councillors can still enjoy their perks and gold-plated pensions, while the rest of us have to suffer austerity-driven cuts to essential services?
